byted-mediakit-media-understand
Understand videos, audio and images with MediaKit MCP tools. Use for media summaries, visual event searches, dialogue analysis, sound descriptions, and timestamped evidence for editing. Use sampled-image understanding, ASR and audio understanding; submit video to an understanding model only when the user explicitly requests direct video understanding. Refine only the intervals needed to answer the question.

This agent exposes MediaKit through MCP/REST tools only. mediakit-cli is not available. Ignore any CLI fallback or installation instructions in this skill and its references; if a capability is unavailable, report the gap instead of running a terminal command.
Media Understanding
Choose the smallest set of evidence that answers the user's question. Prefer available MCP tools for frame extraction and media understanding, identified by their exposed names, descriptions and parameter schemas rather than a service or package name. Use the MCP/REST tools exposed by this environment and follow the same modality routing, sampling, evidence and stopping rules. If a capability is unavailable, report the gap. Use image and audio inputs for understanding; video inputs to understanding models require an explicit user request for direct video understanding. This restriction does not prevent passing video to frame extraction, ASR, OCR or audio extraction tools.
Read references/mcp.md for MCP discovery, arguments and task handling. Read references/sampling.md when choosing video coverage or refining event timing.
Tools
Use only the MediaKit tools exposed by this environment. Do not install or run mediakit-cli.
extract_frames: sample video frames or contact sheets.media_understanding: understand one image, audio, or video asset per call.asr_subtitles: speech evidence and subtitle extraction.- For full transcripts, follow
byted-mediakit-asr.
Pass typed MCP arguments, keep submitted tasks with the same tool, and do not resubmit after a timeout or business error. If a capability is unavailable, report the gap.
Route by the question
| Evidence needed | Default path |
|---|---|
| Image content | Submit the image to the understanding router |
| Video scenes, people, objects, visible events | Extract timestamped frames or readable contact sheets, then submit each image to the router |
| Speech evidence for a summary or subtitle extraction | Reuse adequate source-linked subtitles, or use subtitle recognition on an input supported by the selected interface |
| Full transcript or verbatim speech | Follow byted-mediakit-asr: voice separation, then Doubao ASR; reuse adequate source-linked results |
| Music, sound effects, ambience | Submit audio to the router; extract the soundtrack first if the source is video |
| Burned-in text or subtitles | Inspect clear frames; use video OCR when complete timed text extraction is needed |
| Fine action order or audiovisual timing | Refine visual and sound evidence around the event, align source timestamps, and report unresolved uncertainty |
Do not start every path for every task. For a general video summary, combine visuals and relevant speech when present; analyze other sounds when they matter to the question. For a visual-only request, skip audio. Start independent frame extraction and ASR/audio work concurrently when both are needed, using small batches rather than flooding the service. Do not additionally submit video understanding in parallel unless the user explicitly requests direct video understanding. Requests to summarize a video, understand its story, find highlights or work quickly do not constitute that explicit request.
Workflow
- Identify the question, relevant source or time range, and required precision. Infer a reasonable scope from the request; ask only when ambiguity materially affects the answer.
- Reuse suitable existing frames, transcripts, sound analysis and metadata tied to the same source and interval. Obtain duration or track information only when missing and needed for sampling or routing.
- Prepare reachable inputs. Preserve the original files and signed URLs exactly; never expose credentials. For MCP, use media references accepted by its public schema and runtime resolver. Use media references accepted by the MCP schema and runtime resolver. Do not send Base64, data URLs, local paths or platform IDs as model parameters. If no suitable accessible reference is available, report the missing input capability.
- For video visuals, sample across the requested interval using
extract_frames. Retain actual timestamps and source offsets. Submit readable sheets or individual frames as image inputs to the selected understanding interface, with the question and time mapping in the prompt. Agent visual inspection can supplement or review the model result; if the remote route fails and local inspection is used instead, identify that evidence source. Local decoding may supplement frame-level inspection when the extraction tool cannot provide the required precision. - For speech evidence or subtitles, use
asr_subtitleswith the input types supported by its public schema. If audio-only input has no supported subtitle route, report the gap rather than inventing an audio flag or silently escalating to full transcription. For a requested full transcript, follow../byted-mediakit-asr/SKILL.md, including voice separation before Doubao ASR. For other sound, extract audio only when needed, then submit the audio file to the router. Do not infer absent sound from a silent-looking image, or assume an ASR failure means there is no speech. - Retrieve actual task results before synthesizing. Empty model content is missing evidence even if the task status is completed. Keep successful partial results and explain the gap; do not silently switch to another automated analysis workflow.
- Refine only uncertain intervals that matter to the answer. Add independent higher-resolution images for unreadable details, denser frames for short actions, or a targeted audio excerpt for sound events. Stop when the question is sufficiently supported; do not automatically regenerate all evidence.
- Answer in the user's language. For simple questions, give a concise answer. When timing matters, use a table with source time/range, finding, evidence source, and uncertainty. Keep transcripts, visible observations and interpretations distinct. Do not require a JSON report or extra deliverables unless requested.
Temporal evidence
Sparse images cannot establish all intermediate movements, exact contact times, or the absence of brief events. Densely sampled images improve coverage but do not turn a model summary into frame-accurate evidence. Inspect source frames with their actual presentation timestamps when frame-level precision is required and available.
For audiovisual synchronization, locate the visual event and the corresponding sound event separately on the same source timeline. ASR segment boundaries and model-estimated sound times may be approximate. Account for clip offsets and any known track offsets; retain timing uncertainty instead of claiming millisecond accuracy. Do not resample, retime or otherwise alter timing evidence without preserving the mapping.
Submit video to an understanding model only when the user explicitly requests direct video understanding. An unresolved question, tool support for video, or availability of scene=editing does not create an exception. Refine local visual/audio evidence or report the gap instead. Even when explicitly requested, direct video understanding uses sampling; its timestamps, scene=editing output and higher sampling FPS do not establish frame-accurate action order or audiovisual synchronization. Verify timing claims against source evidence and retain uncertainty.
