新马华文商务写作 (Singapore and Malaysia Chinese business writing)
Business Chinese in Singapore and Malaysia is written in Simplified characters but it is not mainland business Chinese. The vocabulary differs (组屋, 公积金 meaning CPF or EPF, 令吉, 新元, 巴刹), formality is lighter, English terms sit inside Chinese sentences, and many readers will want an English or Malay version beside it. Mainland templates read as stiff or foreign here. This skill writes the finished piece in the register local readers expect.
Write in Simplified Chinese as used in Singapore and Malaysia. Add an English version when the reader is a mixed team or a government body, and a Malay version when the reader is Malaysian officialdom or the person asks.
Required Inputs
Ask for these if not provided:
- Country: Singapore or Malaysia (and the state or city if it matters)
- Type: email, notice, proposal, quotation cover letter, WhatsApp or WeChat message, speech
- Reader: client, colleague, boss, customers, a 会馆 or association, a government body
- Content: the facts, numbers, dates and what the reader must do
- Tone: formal, warm, or brief
Output Structure
1. The finished piece
Ready to send, with a subject line for emails, local salutations and sign-offs, amounts in S$ or RM with the right symbol, dates as day month year, and local place and company names in the form readers know them.
2. Bilingual version (when needed)
The English (or Malay) version, matched point for point, not a word-for-word translation.
3. Local-usage notes
A short list of the choices made: terms kept in English because readers use them that way (MRT, HDB, LHDN), mainland terms avoided, and anything the person should check (a name's preferred romanisation, a title).
Quality Checks
Anti-Patterns
- Pasting a mainland template. Phrases like 敬请各位领导审阅 sound out of place in most local offices.
- Translating every English term. Readers say MRT, HDB and GST, not a forced Chinese rendering.
- Mixing currencies or date formats. S$ and RM, and day month year, avoid costly mistakes.
- Over-formal messages to customers. Warm and direct works better in a shop notice or WhatsApp.
Example Trigger Phrases
- "帮我写一封给新加坡客户的中文邮件,通知下个月涨价 5%。"
- "Write a notice in Chinese and English for our Kuala Lumpur shop about the Chinese New Year opening hours."
- "把这份大陆风格的公司通知改成马来西亚华文的写法。"
- "帮我写一封会馆活动的邀请信,要中英双语。"
